Dr. Mingwu Wang is a fellowship trained cornea specialist. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Wang received his MD and PhD degrees from China Medical University in Shenyang, China. He then received postdoctoral training in several US laboratories. Dr. Wang first finished an Internal Medicine residency at Maryland General Hospital–University of Maryland (2003–2005). He then completed his Ophthalmology residency (2005–2008) and subsequently a Cornea fellowship (2011–2012) at the world renowned Doheny Eye Institute at University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Before joining Cornea Associates in 2016, Dr. Wang had served as the Vice Chair and Director of Cornea and External Disease Service at the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science, University of Arizona College of Medicine. He is currently a Clinical Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona with patient care and teaching responsibilities. He studies corneal diseases and has published more than 40 journal articles and book chapters. Restoration of ocular surface tissue function through regenerative approaches is another area of his research interest. He holds several international patents in the treatment of cornea diseases. He pioneered the use of Morgan lens to treat recalcitrant infectious keratitis and contributed critical first-hand knowledge through animal studies. His book “Eye Diseases Associated with Sleep Disorders” was published in 2015 and promoted public awareness of links between quality of sleep and vision health.

Dr. Wang is experienced in performing eyelid, corneal, refractive and cataract surgeries. Besides the conventional corneal transplantation surgery (penetrating keratoplasty), he also performs the cutting-edge anterior and posterior lamellar keratoplasty, including DALK, DSAEK and DMEK. Lamellar keratoplasty significantly reduces the time needed for visual recovery, improves uncorrected vision, and prolongs the survival of transplanted cornea tissue.
